Diogo de Melo, a Portuguese sailor arrived at the spot by chance in 1523, while heading towards Ormuz. His ship was caught in a violent storm and he had to steer it towards the coast of Daman. After this, Daman was settled as a Portuguese colony and remained so for over 400 years. Before the Portuguese arrived, the area was under the control of the Mughals. A larger fort was constructed in the Motidaman area in the 16th century to guard against them. It still stands today, most of it preserved in its original form. Today the majority of the municipal government offices are situated inside this fort. Three bastions and two gateways are defining aspects of this fort. There is a large statue of St. Jerome installed there and there are two human figures on either side of the gateway. Located very close to the Coast Guard Air Station, on the Daman-Valsad Roa, the \u201cudyan\u201d has a lake-garden and colorful fountains and promenades skirted by different kinds of shrubs. The experience is truly enchanting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is one of the easiest tourist-spot to reach. Nearest airport is Mumbai and the nearest railhead is Vapi in Gujarat. Daman is for all seasons.
