Shopping Destination

Rajasthan is perhaps India’s most colourful state, with the kind of fantastic experiences that bring tourists from across the world to this heritage destination. Along with the sights, sounds and delicacies, there are also some amazing shopping experiences that make every traveller want to take back a souvenir.

There is something for everyone, no matter what their age, gender, budget and preference. From colorful jewellery to beautiful pottery, intricately woven bags to vivid paintings, beautiful textiles to stone items to wooden furniture and more – you can get spoilt for choice in Rajasthan.

The degree of workmanship and artistry is indeed a treat, and the techniques have been passed down the generations. No matter where you go – from a village to a city, you’ll find something you’ll want to buy immediately in Rajasthan.

Considering the relationship of tourists and Rajasthan’s most well-known cities, it is no surprise that the best shopping can be done in hotspots like Jaipur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Pushkar.

Jaipur

Jaipur is great for buying things with a rural touch to them. If you don’t have enough time on your hands and still want to get a variety of knick-knacks for your home, Jaipur is where you should spend your money. You’ll get everything here – jewellery, clothes, footwear, you name it. Jewellery is where Jaipur literally shines – here you can find work done with gems and semi-precious stones, and setting gems in gold and enamel, along with bangles. For textiles, you’ll find sanganeri, hand block-printed textiles, dyed fabrics and kota doria saris.

For artwork, look for miniature paintings, blue pottery, enamelware and brassware.

Some of the most well-known spots for shopping include Johari Bazaar, MI Road, Nehru Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and Chaupar Stalls.

Bikaner

Bikaner is famed for stunning handicrafts which use camel and sheep skin. These include shoes, chairs, rugs, belts, bags and wallets – all things you can use. There are also miniature paintings on camel hides!

Here, you can also find wooden antiques, bangles, carpets and nokha quilts. However, if you have Bikaner in your list, try to plan your visit as the same time as the famous Camel Festival, to take fun camel rides and shop at the stalls that are set up here. Check out King Edward Memorial Road, Junagarh Fort and Station Road for shopping hubs throughout the year.

Jaisalmer

Known for its intricate work, you can see it in the stunning embroidery, mirror work weave on fabric, beautiful rugs and blankets and precise artwork on antiques.  Jutties (hand-made shoes) are another great purchase that you can actually use. There are colorful fabrics, jackets, and camel-leather items. For a burst of color, look into the tie and dye fabric work here. Spend a day out in the city shopping in Bhatia Bazaar, Gandhi Darshan, Seema Gram, Rajasthani Government Shop and the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan (Emporium).

Pushkar

Near Ajmer, Pushkar is known for its massive markets popular for leather goods, colourful toys, beads, miniature paintings and pottery. It is ideal for a visit during the world-famous Pushkar Fair. This is when thousands of pilgrims visit and you can enjoy folk performances and camel races while shopping. Other shopping hubs include Sarafa Bazaar, Baza Bazaar and Kedalganj Bazaar.
